I had the same problem after the 16.04 -> 16.10 upgrade I noticed that newly created users did NOT have the problem. So its was probably a config issue I resolved it by removing the "~/.xinputrc" file in my home directory. which is not present in a new users home directory. This has worked on all

I confirm this bug with gedit, the calculator and text boxes in gtk3 -widget-factory. Changing the colour scheme in Gedit is a workaround.
