Public bug reported:

After about 45-60 minutes of using Ubuntu 16.10 x64, the unity-panel
disappears.  Open apps continue to function but I cannot open new apps
or switch any without the panel.  I get stuck so I am forced to hard
boot.

/var/log/kern.log has the following over and over:
