besto, given the upstream kernel fixed the issue, to further narrow this
down, would using the Xenial enablement kernel also provide a solution
as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack ?

well, I tested it now for more than a month and the error is gone (it
was 4.9.0 from December). Looks like thie fixes in that kernel helped!
