or: is there a certain time span involved? maybe your cpu overheats. try
installing boinc to heat up your cpu a bit ;-) and see what happens
Apparently I spoke too soon.
This does not appear to be a specific gedit bug.
The same thing just happened while I was using nautilus and simply
clicked on a file's property menu. The file property window appeared
but all in transparent colors and soon afterwards the whole system
hung.
