I just fixed it, I upgraded many packages (I can't list them all, but I
noticed that volumeid was replaced by udev newer version)
so let me suggest to (re)install ubuntu-minimal ubuntu-standard grub
udev dbus
Good luck It worked for me ...
BTW any info on how to fix a broken upgrade is welcome
> This happened to me on updating Gutsy to Hardy.
Same applies to me, BTW update-manager failed I did the upgrade by hand
...
I am thinking about replacing /etc/fstab or hal config files
Stay tuned : http://rzr.online.fr/q/mount

This happened to me on updating Gutsy to Hardy.
A clean install of Hardy fixed it. Perhaps some attention has to be paid
to the upgrade process?

I ran up against what sounds like the same problem being described here.
Basically, you can mount usb devices or floppy disks as 'root' but not
as other users. Once I added the account in question to the "plugdev"
group. logged that account out, and re-initialized the dbus script I had
no problem.
it is working again on kde4 :)

Same here, hal and dbus are playing up and not allowing a normal user to
mount anything at all, or to use the network-manager applets either.
Doing it as root works fine.

FYI, my problem with not auto-mounted USB devices on Gnome was caused by hal,
not started correctly on boot.
See bug #25931 for the details.
To sum up, in /etc/rc2.d, I had S12hal, S13gdm and S50dbus !!
I've just changed that to S12dbus, S13hal and S14gdm (as I wanted S11 just for
klogd), restar
I assigned it to gnome-libs, but maybe gnome-vfs is better.

Same as Benjamin_L.
It's not working on my primary desktop (A), but it's working on another
computer (B), both are running up-to-date Hardy with Gnome.
dmesg/logs show the device on both but it's not auto-mounted on A.
The only difference I see is that A is always attached to sdc1 (sg3 type 0)
w
auto mouting still doesn't work for me (gnome), but I don't know if this
is the same bug.

Yeah, right, after some updates of kde-libs (I think) the problem
disappeared. If it's okay with you, we can mark it as solved or invalid
(don't know exactly what one should use if the problem just "disappears"
without any special patches...).
