Are you using Nvidia restrict drivers + compiz? This is a common problem
with this set.
If yes. Disable the visual effects to none and test again...

Hello,
I'm having a problem with the X locking up/showing a black screen. This
started in edge eft (ubuntu 6.10). Here is the repro sequence
1) Create 2 accounts 1 user account and 1 admin account
2) start ubuntu
3) at the login screen log on to the user
the workaround works, but I still rather have this bug fixed, since
others are experiencing it as well

Just use
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Followed by
/etc/init.d/gdm start
This will restart the gdm and resolve the problem
