Don't know if this is related to -intel driver, but I have same problem.
When I shut down my laptop, most of the times I ended up with blank
screen and flashing led of HDD in my laptop.
I just installed http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/x11/xserver-xorg-
video-i810 from hardy. Dependencies was ok.
Thanks for your comment. Can you say which patch to the hardy version is
responsible for fixing this bug, so it can be proposed as a candidate
for backporting?

I believe his is a bug in the -intel driver as i was affected by it before.
A change to i810 or the upgrade to hardy -intel fixes it.
