Actually this is not so easy, usually virtualbox and ext pack are
compatible each other, just sometimes you are forced to upgrade it too.
Maybe upstream can provide some useful message to ask users to update,
when the virtualbox update makes the extension pack incompatible

No, I had not upgraded my extension pack and after I had the error did
not occur any longer.
However, VirtualBox being capable of upgrading without *also* upgrading
any extension packs classifies as a bug.
