Public bug reported:

Unity is an amazing desktop environment, however one feature that is
missing is the ability to tile windows using a tree-based approach, ala
i3 (http://i3wm.org). This makes Unity much harder to use whilst only
using a keyboard, as the mouse is required to place and move windows.

Tree-based tiling also helps to maximise screen real-estate, akin to
Unity's incorporation of screen controls when windows are maximised, by
optimising window placement using horizontal and vertical panels, and
resizing windows into optimal shapes and sizes.

Please consider this as a wishlist item.
