Oh, that might be a mistake on my part. There was so many crashes that
I've probably bundled them all together when posting upstream. Sorry but
I don't really remember the specifics of how this specific one was
triggered.

Ok, I was just wondering if there could be a third kind of backtrace in
the same situation, in addition to the two kinds I've posted on github.
Anyway, if you don't get this crash anymore (in 17.10 or in 17.04 with
upstream patch), I think you can close this.

Ok good. For reference, I've added the patch and the links to upstream
reports to bug 1675888, which seems to be the oldest report about these
crashes.
