As I wrote on 2018-01-09:
The DpkgHistoryLog.txt shows you installed MySQL Server 5.7, and then
MariaDB Server 10.1. This migration path is not supported. From Oracle
MySQL 5.7 you need to upgrade to MariaDB 10.2 or newer.
** Changed in: mariadb-10.1 (Ubuntu)
Status: Confirmed => Invalid
Note that purging MySQL 5.7 server prior Installing MariaDB 10.1 won't
work neither due to apparmor profile. At least, MariaDB server won't
start.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mariadb-10.1/+bug/1806263
Env: Ubuntu Bionic Beaver ;)

You received this bug notification because
I am getting the same error whether I try to install MySql or MariaDB on
Ubuntu 18.04. Do I have to throw away two days work and start the
entire migration to Ubuntu 18.04 over again? Why after I manually
removed the MySQL packages did the MariaDB package still see them?
$ sudo apt-get remove
** Summary changed:
- package mariadb-server-10.1 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
+ package mariadb-server-10.1 failed to install since mysql-server-5.7 isn't
purged
