It's in Debian, and the descriptive text includes
> "Because of its mature age, NEdit does not support UTF-8 text files,

There is no UTF8 support in the sense you can edit or view unicode, it's
still a single-byte editor. The warning you see was to prevent a crash
in certain versions of OpenMotif (I believe it was the file selector
box), so what it does is ignore the utf8 part and try to run in the non-
utf8 locale "
Yes, this bug is not solved.
However, previously I was under the impression that nedit threw a
warning at me. It doesn't do that (anymore).
I will try to have a look at why the warning doesn't work.

This is still present in nedit 1:5.5-2ubuntu3, in Gutsy. It does,
however, now throw a warning when you try to open a UTF-8 file.

Confirmed. I have my locale set to en_US.UTF-8, using nedit
5.5-1ubuntu1.
The unicode test file at
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/examples/UTF-8-demo.txt displays in a
mangled fashion; it looks like ISO 8859.
