All the attached files now open completely normally for me in Karmic.
This bug seems to have been fixed by the recent poppler updates, so I
don't think it's actually a problem with inkscape itself

An interesting development...
Attempting to open the file at startup ("inkscape file.pdf") results in
a crash, while attempting to open the file after startup does not.

I cannot reproduce this bug using karmic alpha 4. I tried opening all
of the attached documents, and did not see a crash. However, the opened
document appears blank and I receive the following message on the
command-line:
cairo context error: invalid matrix (not invertible)
(inkscape:4632): Gdk
I should add that I was opening the documents by starting a new inkscape
session and using File->Open

Me again, I tried all your samples on Ubuntu 8.10 and Inkscape development
revision 20623. All files import fine.
I have testet Guiseppes file "A PDF that crashes Inkscape" on my inkscape 0.46
from Ubuntu repo (inkscape 0.46-2ubuntu2) and it crashes as reportet. The error
should be resolved now

I should also mention that SVGs and a PDF that I exported from Inkscape
a long time ago seem to work fine, so it's something in this file in
particular.
The file I'm attaching to this comment is stdout/stderr output from
inkscape (inkscape >& inkscape-output.txt)
