The dmesg you attaches is not related to this issue.
Can you try latest mainline kernel (v4.13-rc3)?
I can't reproduce the issue on both Zesty kernel (v4.10) and Artful kernel
(v4.11).

Yes, it's the one that came with the laptop. I can't isolate the exact
problem. It'll initially work for a few minutes when I first plug it
in, then it'll become completely unresponsive and I'll have to unplug it
and use wireless. Then if I plug it in an hour later, it'll work fine
for hours.

Which dongle do you use? Is it a Dell one?

Title:
Dell Precision 5520 crashin
The default kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 is not stable on the Dell Precision
5520. I had to upgrade to 4.10.0-27 for this problem to go away.
However, the ethernet dongle still does not work reliably.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
