So... when I do a Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right, is that switching between
workspaces or viewports? If it's switching between viewports, and
Workspace Switcher works with viewports, I should be able to see the
previews, but I don't.

The problem is you configured compiz to use virtual desktops which is
not supported (in hardy we don't allow you to do this).
Install compizconfig-settings-manager, go to
System-Preferences-Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, click on General
Options, go to the Desktop Size tab, and set Number of
Oh. That did it! Thanks a lot!
