What about if you just comment out the font paths from the xorg.conf?
Those are not written anymore during installation.

Hi Bryce,
Many thanks for that fast response. It did the trick beautifully -
something a couple of hours Googling failed to manage.
If I can go for a couple of days without crashing, that will prove that
the suggested solution is a worker.
