I think I may be experiencing the same issue, let me explain mine and
verify that is the same symptoms.
(Dell XPS M1330, NVIDIA Graphics, amd64)
From powering the machine on to GDM login there is nothing but a black screen.
Once GDM starts the video comes up and functions. Boot splash does *not*
yes very similar only I get no GFX at all with hardy.

After speaking to our Lug Mentor it was suggested that I try a 32bit
install.
This seems to of worked flawlessly. Everything is detected correctly
and working fine.
So that would indicate an issue within the 64bit version.

Are you referring to the binary nvidia driver? The open source driver
should work for your laptop, but there could be other issues if the
livecd is not able to start X.

Neither NV or Nvidia work properly in Gutsy. But in hardy I haven't yet
tried installing the Nvidia driver.
