I don't know if this is still reproducible or not, but the *issue* is obvious: Debian/Ubuntu Slime depends on CLC, aka Common Lisp Controller, which is not present on the non-debian packages CMUCL used above. Either the packaged version should check for CLC presence, and report "Cannot use Debian/
