Do you still have the problem in 8.10? If so, please install gphoto2
and do
gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile /tmp/gphoto.debug.txt -L
after the camera got plugged in. Please attach /tmp/gphoto.debug.txt
here.

I accidently added Edgy Backports also to the the list of affected
distrubutions (the Launchpad Edge version isn't always that clear ;) )
and there is nowhere to remove it, and I am not sure whether it is
affected
