Ubuntu Firefox Desktop icon is HUGE (about 5 times normal) a
Roger, you could use the Firefox Beta PPA until Firefox 60 is released
or you could make the symlinks yourself:
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps/firefox.png
should point to
/usr/lib/firefox/browser/chrome/icons/default/default64.png
for instance. Do the same for the 16, 32, and 48 sizes also.
How long until the fix shows up in a real-world update, or will that
even happen in a way that will fix the current installation?
If not, how can I fix this directly ? If I manually put different size
icons into the apps folders eg /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps, will
the normal resizing now
This issue is fixed in the Firefox Beta PPA and the Firefox packaging
code branch.

I have the same problem. The package installed in my computer is:
59.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
This package puts icons of several sizes in:
/usr/lib/firefox/browser/chrome/icons/default
but it only puts one icon in the directory
/usr/share/icons/hicolor
namely in:
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/12
** Description changed:
Last Firefox Automatic update (I presume to v59.0) occurred. In any
case, the last automatic update about 3/16/18
Firefox seems to operate correctly other than the below :
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS
Release: 16.04
firefox:
Installed: 59.
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
