Oh, and one more thing.
Curiously, though, I've noticed that if I query the
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
It does shift from open to closed and back again when I close/open the
laptop lid. Just no event fires.

I've got a Sony Vaio SZ650N/C with the same problem. I am running the
AMD64 version of Hardy. I've done an acpi_listen and closed and reopend
the lid - there are absolutely no events listed there, nor in the
acpid.log. I've chatted with the HAL folks, thinking that the problem
might be

Please run acpi_listen in a terminal/console and tail -f /var/log/acpid in
another, then close and open the lid, and paste the output from both terminals
here.
Maybe it's the same issue as with bug 163265. Please try the workaround
mentioned there.
