Hi, since COVID-19 forced everyone to dig up old webcams, I thought I'd share
my "universal" workaround (sorry it's a clunky one):
Step 1 (one time): sudo apt install v4l2loopback-utils
Step 2 (redo after reboot): sudo modprobe v4l2loopback devices=1
exclusive_caps=1

I managed to get the camera to work with cheese with:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese
The same trick did not work with skype.

I am also affected, running Ubuntu 18.04 with kernel 4.15.0-43-generic.
Microphone works fine, but camera does not work. Cheese does not detect
it at all. Skype does but shows a black image.

I found an application that detects the camera, vokoscreen. But neither
cheese nor skype can detect it. So I will close this as invalid and
investigate somewhere else.

I tried also the 4.13 kernel, and the webcam is not working there either
(not detected by applications, detected by the system). This is strange
because this webcam was working for me in Ubuntu 17.10.
The microphone of the webcam is working normally.

I tried the 4.17rc1 mainline kernel and same thing, webcam detected by
the system but not by applications.
