I do not see it as related to external problem. As far as I can
understand the situation, it relates to certain configuration during
initial loading of Live CD. It does not matter where wrong configuration
came from: were it external program, or (stupid) actions of newbie-
superuser.

First of all, thank you very much.
Sorry, I needed the machine, so I re-formatted root partition. I did not
preserve copy of the update log either, as Linux was not bootable.
I do not consider this to be related to update process per se. My
primary concern were problems during installation
Since the problem no longer exists and may have been related to some external
program

Sorry, I forgot to mention: Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Live CD, Dell OptyPlex
GX60, multy-partition configuration:
1) Primary - active - Ext3 (grub host)
2) Extended
2a) Ext3 Home
2b) Swap
3) Primary FAT32 - unused
4) Primary NTFS - WinXP, practically unused.
