@ #4 Daniel: yes the problem has occured 4 times, i now have reinstalled 18.04
clean
with all updates up to date @ 15/7/18 i will report back if this happens again..

lotuspsychje, has the problem reoccurred? Or ever occurred more than
once?
If it does then please try moving/removing /var/lib/gdm3/* and reboot
(per bug 1779476).

I had the same problem... but not able to recover following your
instruction of reinstalling gdm and gdm3. I had to switch to lightdm and
now running lightdm. Not able to switch back to gdm. I'm using a ATI
Radeon Graphic Card not sure if that has any thing to do with the
issue.
