Unfortunately, I never got any resolution to the problem and couldn't
afford to be without a printer anymore, (I only saw your post after the
fact) so I ditched my 10 year old Laserjet6L and purchased a new stand-
alone Laserjet 3055 I could plug into the network and forget about.

I have a similar problem with HP LaserJet 6L printer on x86 machine. It
simply does not work and it does not even print a test page or anything.
I use Xubuntu and I used system_config_printer.py to add the printer and
configure it.
Debugging info:
$ lsmod | grep lp
lp 12580 0
A bit more information that may help:
lpr logfile
