I've tried recreating this using gnome-system-tools version
2.21.92-0ubuntu1 on Hardy Heron and was unsuccessful. After checking a
users name for a group and viewing the group again the checkbox was
still checked.

What's even more strange is that I checked all the groups, including the
admin group, yesterday and my name wasn't checked in any of them. Today
it is checked in all of them except my main group, just as you
described. The only thing I can think of that changed was that I

I had to trash VirtualBox because it made the mouse cursor invisible. I
installed VMware Server, did a completely new install, and installed all

I can see that it works only if the user name appears in the /etc/group file
near the group name, but are not considered GIDs.
For example, in my Ubuntu Box the user 'andrea' is considered a member of the
group 'admin' because in my /etc/group I have a line like this:
admin:x:110:andrea

Well, I'm running Hardy Alpha 2 in VirtualBox now and it is not fixed.
However, this is a fresh install and I have not done the updates yet.
