update: I've just installed and tried to run blender on another X31 thinkpad and this also has the same problem, so it is repeatable. Using the -d switch gives the same output as the initial reporters post. The X31 uses a different ati gpu from the initial reporter. -- Blender v2.4.4(32bit)
