Tried Hardy Heron Alpha6 but couldn't replicate the exact problem, as I
could not get access to my hard disk from the Live CD (authentication
problem?). So I could not try the same thing of transferring files over
ssh. Downloading a large file through firefox went fine though.

an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test
the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You

I can't replicate this here. I think it's not SSH specific. I think
it's a kernel issue with the driver for your network card.
