Public bug reported: I upgraded my amd64 system from Gutsy to Hardy specifically to try out the new PulseAudio integration. When I tried to run several SDL apps (playsound, mplayer with "-o sdl", moon-lander) they all died, complaining "Couldn't open audio device!". The libsdl1.2debian- pulseaudio binary package had been installed automatically, but SDL apps were not able to play sound using any SDL driver. When I installed the libsdl1.2debian-all package instead, SDL programs were able to play sound using the alsa, pulseaudio, and esd drivers by setting the SDL_AUDIODRIVER environment variable to one of those values. It seems that libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio is not built correctly, at least on amd64. As discussed in Bug #128447, the various binary packages including libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio seem unnecessary, since libsdl1 .2debian-all does the job well.
