This is now working again in Hardy Heron, thanks! Somehow the Gutsy version of kmix corrupted my ~/kde/share/config/kmixctrlrc and even the Gutsy live CD did not work. I tried the Hardy live CD and the hardware volume roller worked out of the box so I upgraded. It still wasn't working so I tried
