OH I should have specified that I upgraded to 12.04.1 by booting from an
.iso and installing over the 10.04 system, preserving the /home
partition. SO, yes, I ran the installer from the liveCD image.

This has not been a problem, at least on MY system (Dell Dimension E510)
for several years. Possibly not since 8.10 Intrepid. I just upgraded
recently to 12.04.1 LTS and it wasn't a problem.
Just in case I set something in the BIOS way back when, I just looked
and there is no "Legacy USB" setting
Can you reproduce this bug in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

About the workaround...
When I press shift I`m prompted:
boot graphics? (yes | no) > yes
detect display? (yes | no) > yes
then, I receive this message (in both cases of "detect display")
gfx code:
mem area 0 0x00052a10 - 0x0009fc00
mem area 1 0x0080 - 0x0090
mem area 2 0x00a0 - 0x00b0
Found a workaround in bug 35530. You have to press down the shift key
during boot.
