from my PPA at http://ppa.launchpad.net/timg-tpi/ubuntu ? There is a
madwifi DKMS package there that is based on the madwifi-hal-2008-08-15
branch from madwifi.org. Alternatively, you can build from my git repo

This is the part od dmesg related to the wireless after disabling
(blacklisted) the ath_pci module on the Asus Eee PC 701:
[ 23.922197] ath5k_pci :01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ
18
[ 23.91] ath5k_pci :01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 23.922283] ath5k_pci
Also tested Intrepid alfa 5 on Eee PC 701, 512MB / 4GB
Wireless still does not work out of the box, but with a minimal change
it does.
Just blacklist the ath_pci module and reboot. Wireless will be working
with no problem.
To blacklist the module:
$ sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
Then, add
Actually I've built my own linux-2.6.27-2 for hardy and It does work
immediately after installing the kernel.
The only thing I've done it's adding the ath5k module to /etc/modules.

Madberry, great procedure! Fixes my HP dv6809 laptop. Thanks much.
MY2CENTS: I still think these hardware vendors should ensure 'Linux
Compatibility'.
AKA: I'd not have bought this HP laptop if I knew the 'new' card didn't support
