This is because xubuntu uses the gnome screensaver. A workaround would
be to edit /usr/bin/xflock4 to make it use the gnome screensaver (I have
no idea about the command you need though).

One more thing to know: I used the alternate install CD
http://se.archive.ubuntu.com/mirror/cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/7.10/release/xubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso,
MD5 was correct and "check the disk for errors" resulted O.K.
completely.
