after playing around for a while I detected that the hidden items are
showing up if the window is wide enough. You can see it on the
screenshot. Small window - items don't come up. Wide window - items show
up.

Sorry...perhaps a screenshot will help. There ist not always enough
place to show all items of a toolbar. In this case you can find an arrow
on the right side. Clicking on it should present you the hidden items (I
think). But this is not working in gutsy.
