I can reproduce this problem using a Epson Perfection V30. I have to
select a bigger scan area, and then manually crop every picture using
Gimp or another picture editor.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Install brother MFC-9340CDW :-)
2. Put newsprint or similar on flat bed.
3. Start xsane. In preview window, select +zoom and click somewhere to zoom in.
Then right-click to stop zoom function, and left-click-drag to select a
small scan area (about 1x1 inches)
4. Click
