After setting GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT=5 and update-grub command countdown is set to 5 seconds, as expected. System is closing or restarting without any problem. I'm using BTRFS on root partition and boot partitions and file system doesn't report any problems. ** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu)

It looks like your last boot failed somehow. Try to add this to /etc/default/grub to get 10 seconds recordfail timeout: GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT=10 Perhaps your hard disk was not unmounted clean. Could you check your hard disk with fsck from live usb or recovery mode? ** Changed in: grub2
