with X stopped, I investigated further and found my video card was

For X crashes/lockups, we need either detailed steps to reproduce the
issue or a full backtrace. I'm guessing since you described the crashes
as random, the former may be hard to do, however since you can ssh into
the machine after a lockup, the latter should be doable. Directions for
The error message is from your input device(s), not related to the
crash.
