My system with snd_hda_intel makes loud popping sounds whenever I
suspend and resume it. One of them is loud or severe enough to cause my
hi-fi amplifier to go into automatic shutdown mode, and I'm worried that
it may damage my speakers.

Ubuntu 8.04 underwent some big audio backend changes. Can you test this
under Ubuntu 8.04 (or even the 8.10 betas) and check whether this
problem still persists?

There is also a much more subtle pop when the sound is done playing, or
when the last audio application is closed. This one doesn't
particularly bother me since it is barely audible, but if that pop could
also be removed, that would be awesome.
