I am not sure if I understand what capacity the database has - since a
database is produced from a spreadsheet for the purposes of mail
merging, any information that was derived in the spreadsheet via formula
which includes switches and conditions do not find their way into the
database leaving the
Thanks for the solution. I guess it comes of expecting OpenOffice to be
absolutely amazing, instead of mostly amazing!

Well, I guess this isn't really a bug -- just a lack of an expected
feature, and pretty useless help files. The bottom line is that you
cannot directly mailmerge against a spreadsheet. Instead, you have to
transform the spreadsheet into a database using the OO DB package.
So, in order to solve t
I am also having this problem. Both "OK" and "Edit" buttons are grayed-
out in the "Select Address Book" dialog. I installed openoffice.org-
base, and it did not help.
Running Ubuntu 9.1 and OO 3.1.1.

I should mention that I've installed openoffice.org-base, but did not
resolve the problem. Also, I'm using Open Office as bundled by Ubuntu
9.04. OO version 3.0.1.

Thanks Steve!
Some more info from my side: I only "lost" openoffice.org-base after a clean
install with Hardy. I have a different computer with Feisty installed and
there the base package was installed with the rest of openoffice.org, as part
of the default Ubuntu installation.

I have just checked and this installation has been auto-updated to
1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6 of openoffice.org-base and openoffice.org-base-core and
can confirm that this bug is no longer present.
My installation came with the database modules (as Feisty) so I cannot
address whether Hardy handles it the sa
What is the reason for marking this invalid? Failing silently because
of missing dependencies doesn't seem reasonable: It means new Ubuntu
users who want to try out mail merge will not be able to do so.

Yes, Carl, that does the trick! Installing openoffice.org-base activated the
buttons. Thanks for your help!
This is still a bug, though, it now has a valid workaround available.

I found the problem: Apparently 8.04 doesn't install OpenOffice base
alongside writer and calc. After installing the "openoffice.org-base"
package (plus dependencies), the problems disappeared.
It's still not possible to remove a database selection entry (as I
described above). Is there another
I have the same problem in Ubuntu 8.04, OpenOffice.org 2.4, "openoffice
.org-code 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6, Tue Apr 22".
I think the following is also related to this problem:
1. Insert -> Fields -> Other (Ctrl+F2)
2. Select the "Database" tab
3. Select the "Mail merge fields" type.
4. Add database file
