So perhaps the kernel could (or maybe it does already) issue a message
that means "I've detected a new device but I don't know what it is yet",
and Nautilus could translate this into a progress window (even if its
progress bar was an indeterminate one).

This might currently be very tricky to implement, since the kernel just
takes a while to read the file system information. At least you won't
get a dead nautilus window, it only appears when the device has been
completely detected (at least on my box).
