Someone please tell me if I am insane or what, but was there ever an
Xubuntu alpha 4? And why don't the latest few daily build liveCDs even
have the xubuntu-desktop package installed??

You are not allowed to include anything on CDs that might end up pulling
in libavcodec*. If you try, this will happen. This is according to a
Technical Board resolution of 2007-01-02.
Xubuntu team, please arrange to stop trying to pull in libavcodec1d by
dependencies.
