oh, it can be worked around by moving /opt/ltsp/*/boot/nbi.img-* to
somewhere else before upgrading kernels.

this is because mkelfimage doesn't handle when the file already exists.
this was worked around in debian sid by having mkelfimage output to a
temporary file and moving it into place when finished. i believe this
fix is also upstream.
