Further investigation reveals that an app needs to implement the
back/forward navigation in the file chooser. In the meantime, you can

Yep I reproduced this with a M510 mouse. After enabling the mouse
buttons (I never use them) and starting xbindkeys I see that my forward
and backward thumb buttons work in Firefox (did not before these steps):
$ sudo apt install xvkbd xbindkeys
$ cat ~/.xbindkeysrc
# Mouse Buttons
"xvkbd -xsendev
Problem still observed with:
LibreOffice
Version: 6.4.6.2
Build-ID: 1:6.4.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

I would expect to geht back with one mouse-button for the thumb, if I
was in the wrong folder, as I can do in Firefox, or Nautilus.

Can you tell me more? What model of mouse are you using? So you click
save and while the save dialog is up, these mouse buttons don't do
anything - what do you expect to happen?
