I don't know why and how but effects are working again...
I just reinstalled kwin-kde4 and now the effects are working. But I tried this
before and than it did not work :-(
Very strange... But I also removed kwinrc from .kde4/share/config directory. I
have no idea. But I'm glad that it is working
Yes, his architecture is 32-bit. However, he can't even log into a KDE4
session without Kwin crashing on him, so this may or may not be a
different bug; I'll post any solutions we find. Let me know if I need
to file a separate report.

I just updated KDE on my Laptop to 4.0.1 and here KWin Compositing is working.
The facts: ATI graphics (newest driver)
x86 Gutsy
So I could imagine that the problem is either related to NVIDIA or to
amd64.

I just checked out KWin from svn tag 4.0.1 and build it: Well there it
works...
So I used following KWin:

Just to note: My Xorg configs are correct. At the moment I'm running
compositing effects with build from trunk ;-)
