With the help of sjoerd on irc this problem was tracked to be a bug in
pulsesink with powerpc. Debian already has a patch for it since over 2 months
ago, in gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio-0.9.7-2 - but it wasn't synced to ubuntu for
some reason. I manually built it on my system and it now works great.
On a livecd (daily from Feb 21 for example) sound worked fine, but after
install on the system still the problem persists... I keep the /home
partition so maybe it is still related to it? on the other hand a newly
created user had the same problem...

this problem...

the hardware/driver since sound works ok as long as pulseaudio is not
running, or that the pulse sink is not selected for gstreamer apps.

Yes I have already checked that actually, and now once more after a
series of updates in Hardy. A new user has 'audio' group and the problem
is exactly the same.

First, let's rule out a botched dist-upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. In
8.04, create a new user (make sure the user is also in the audio group),
then log into GNOME using the new user. Then, please verify that the
symptom you described in the bug title remains relevant for this new
user.
