Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub
Ubuntu boots fine if after the GRUB menu shows, I'm picking the menu item manually by pressing "ENTER" on the keyboard. If I let the GRUB timeout expire, Ubuntu doesn't boot and immediately restarts. I'm using a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 USB keyboard and BIOS set to 'emulate legacy USB keyboard' if that helps. Because without that option, Ubuntu's GRUB, Ubuntu LiveCD, in addition to many other boot- time applications cannot use the keyboard at all. This seems to be somewhat configuration-specific as many other computers boot fine with GRUB. I think it also relates to the Linux kernel. I've tried experimenting with/disabling the following GRUB options, they have no effect to resolving this problem: * hiddenmenu * quiet * splash $ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10" $ dpkg -l grub | cat Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-f/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/t-aWait/T-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++-==============-==============-============================================ ii grub 0.97-29ubuntu4 GRand Unified Bootloader $ aptitude show linux-image-`uname -r` Package: linux-image-2.6.22-14-server State: installed Automatically installed: yes Version: 2.6.22-14.51 Priority: optional Section: base Maintainer: Ubuntu Kernel Team <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Uncompressed Size: 63.9M Depends: initramfs-tools (>= 0.36ubuntu6), coreutils | fileutils (>= 4.0), module-init-tools (>= 3.2.1-0ubuntu1) PreDepends: dpkg (>= 1.10.24) Recommends: lilo (>= 19.1) | grub Suggests: fdutils, linux-doc-2.6.22 | linux-source-2.6.22 Conflicts: hotplug (< 0.0.20040105-1) Provides: fuse-module, ivtv-modules, kvm-api-4, linux-image, linux-image-2.6, rhcs-modules2-1 Description: Linux kernel image for version 2.6.22 on x86/x86_64 This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.6.22 on x86/x86_64. Also includes the corresponding System.map file, the modules built by the packager, and scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in an unbootable state after an update. Supports Server processors. Geared toward server systems. You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-server meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed. $ lspci -vv 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.
