Running Lucid and Jaunty while network down.
Tried to use distro DVD to add packages. Synaptic reported that it could not
find the drive etc.
I used a shell and found /dev/cdrom, /dev/cdrw, /dev/dvd and /dev/dvdrw. I
could use 'ls' to view
the contents of the media. I could use 'eject '

Thank you for suggesting Jaunty, but our hardware has since been left
behind by Ubuntu, and purchasing new equipment is not in the budget of
my family. Upgrading to the last few versions was
