I found out that I should look in the gnu.trace file, there these lines
are logged:

* 12:41:37 ERROR <aqbanking> swift.c:  524: Too many bytes in line, maybe not 
SWIFT
* 12:41:37 ERROR <aqbanking> swift.c:  111: Error importing data (-1)
* 12:41:37  WARN <gnc.import.aqbanking> gnc_file_aqbanking_import: Error on 
import

I tried this with a .940 file that did get imported in an earlier
version.
