OK, nathan's suggestion was fairly easy. But could somebody PLEASE
PLEASE write something (A dialog, under removable drives and media where
it used to be, preferably) that lets ordinary users change the default
media player without having to manually edit mime types and .desktop
files FFS.

Just done some testing today and come up with a working per-user method,
which I recommend now rather than my previous efforts. Sorry about the

there is just a lot of code which has been rewritten, everybody has lot

Hello,
I agree with Nathan, I believed Ubuntu/linux was all about user control and
not been like MS and taking that control away from us. Gutsy was good in
allowing this tinkering to happen, and I am a bit worried that it is now gone
in Hardy. I have also seen this in other areas also.

I can tell from what I've read that this isn't a Nautilus bug as such,
but why not have the ability to choose an application manually? Or use a
special command? I want to be able to use this command for playing DVDs
in Hardy:

Ok, I'd like to confirm this problem as well.
I'm having this problem with the VLC player. I want to set it as my
default DVD player, but it is not listed in the drop down list. So at
this point I cannot have VLC be my default player upon insertion of a
movie DVD.
