is as expected. So you can safely delete
~/.local/share/applications/chromium_chromium.desktop, the icon should
remain in your dock.

solution for the disappearing icon be to add the .desktop file. I would
certainly be interested in a better solution. Changing to "current"
seems to have worked but I sense you hinting there is a larger problem

Icon=/snap/chromium/current/chromium.png
I'm curious as to why you need a copy of chromium_chromium.desktop in
~/.local/share for it to appear in your favourites bar. Isn't the one
installed by the snap (in
/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/chromium_chromium.desktop
I should have mentioned - I can go in and update
chromium_chromium.desktop with the new location, the icon appears and
everything works fine.
